Speeding Tickets

ZERO POINTS ON YOUR LICENSE IS OUR GOAL

Some speeding tickets received in Riverhead will end up at Riverhead Town Court located at 210 Howell Avenue, Riverhead while others will end up at the Southampton Town Court located at 32 Jackson Avenue, Hampton Bays. Speeding tickets are prosecuted differently in each court.

You do not want to be convicted of a speeding if you can at all avoid it.  All Speeding convictions are problematic.  First, they tend to carry a lot of points on your license.  For example a speeding ticket of 76 mph in a 55 mph zone carries 6 points by itself.  Higher speeds carry higher points.  If you were to plead guilty to a 76mph in a 55mph zone, aside from the fine and surcharge that the court would impose, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles would assess an additional penalty called a Driver Responsibility Assessment Fee of at least $300, payable over 3 years.  The assessment fee increases with the number of points assessed to your license.  If you are convicted of 3 speeding tickets that occurred within 18 months of each other, you will lose your New York drivers license for 6 months.  Furthermore, speeding convictions lead to higher insurance premiums.  Second, some speeding tickets carry automatic license suspensions by the department of motor vehicles. Also the judge hearing the case may choose to suspend your license pending prosecution while the case is pending or after the case is resolved.

While the ultimate outcome of your speeding ticket will depend on a number of factors, our goal is to have your speeding ticket dismissed or reduced as much as possible.  We are proud of our accomplishments and the results that we have been able to obtain for our clients over the years.

Riverhead Speeding tickets handled by this law office can usually be reduced to a lesser violation, and often to 0 point infractions.  The ultimate resolution depends on a variety of factors,

The following are the number of points that each speeding conviction carries:
3 points ----- 1 to 10 mph over limit
4 points ---- 11 to 20 mph over limit
6 points ---- 21 to 30 mph over limit
8 points ---- 31 to 40 mph over limit
11 points ---- over 40 mph over limit

Speeding Ticket Convictions can lead to an additional NYS DMV Driver Assessment fee

In addition to the points, fines, surcharges and insurance increases that result from a speeding ticket conviction, the NYS DMV will also assess a driver assessment fee of $300 for those who receive 6 points on their license within an 18 month period (total of $300 payable over 3 years) and an additional $25 per point to be paid for 3 years for each point thereafter.

This will appear as a separate bill from the DMV, and would apply to anyone who pleads guilty to a 6 point speeding ticket, or to anyone who already has points on his or her license within the past 18 months and then is convicted of a speeding ticket with a total point accumulation over the past 18 months of 6 or more points.

REMEMBER, THREE (3) SPEEDING TICKET CONVICTIONS
WITH DATES OF VIOLATION WITHIN 18 MONTHS OF EACH OTHER
WILL LEAD TO A 6 MONTH SUSPENSION OF YOUR LICENSE
